People always ask me......"when did you start DJ'ing??".....I remember the first days of wanting to become a DJ....probably around 1986-1987.......at a boring visit to relatives with my parents one Saturday night......I brought along a portable radio and I stumbled upon "The Hot 103 Saturday Night Dance Party".....a once a week radio mix show featuring DJ's like Louie Vega, Scott Blackwell, Roman Ricardo, Freddie Bastone, Glenn Friscia etc......now I was sort of familiar with the dance music played on local radio and the breakdance era from school mates older than I was.....but I had no clue what a DJ mix or DJ set was until that Saturday night.......but boy was I floored hearing those songs I would tape from the radio all jammed into one continuous set.....I immediately got the bug.
I remember living in Queens and a friend of a friend of a friend knew a guy who would "get" DJ equipment.......so for $100 I managed to get a small used Gemini mixer and a belt driven Technics table.....after months of begging my parents I eventually got my first SL1200 and i had 2 tables and a mixer.....but no records. My birthday in 1987 (my 14th) my best childhood friend surprised me with a record as a gift.....a 12" single of Will to Power-"Dreamin".......I was instantly hooked......so now obviously I had no choice but to get MORE records to play with..........so with whatever other birthday money I got I went to Fresh Pond Road to Numbers Records and Tapes..........and the rest is history......... #dj #recordcollector #louievega #glennfriscia #hot103 #newyorkcity #DJ #mikemaurro #brooklyn #queens #manhattan #vinyljunkie #discomusic #freestylemusic #housemusic #nycDJ #recordstore #willtopower #12inchsingle #technics1200 #ridgewoodqueens
